On May 1st, 2019 I committed to myself to do at a minimum 30 minutes of swimming, biking or running. I did this after my friend Dwayne posted is 500th day of the same streak so on his day 501 I did day 1!

For years my training had suffered from inconsistency. I would register for a race and do about 75% of the workouts in a training plan, participate in the race and then would stop training. January 5th, 2020 marked day 250 of my exercise streak, it was a 2:24:31 bike ride on my trainer watching Team Canada win Gold at the world junior hockey tournament.

Below is 4 years of my Strava data to show the inconsistency:

At first this streak was difficult to see how I would be able to commit to this with all the other stuff that happens in life. After about 3 months the streak just becomes part of your day. That said, I have had a few interesting workouts to keep the streak alive. For example, I ran near Toronto Pearson airport before returning a rental car and did a restroom sink shower before getting on a flight. Check out my workouts and follow my journey on Strava https://www.strava.com/athletes/11142488

So what has the streak done for me? I am a lot less stressed, I have lost 45 pounds, 30 minutes is easy now and I have committed to Ironman Canada 2020 in Penticton.

I will write another blog on the tools I use to keep my streak in check.
