Back in grade 10 I had dreamed of doing an IRONMAN but never acted on the dream for numerous reasons including: location of races, a lack of funds and the fact I was a poor swimmer.
About a year ago, my friend Dwayne brought up over lunch how he was committing to complete an IRONMAN in 2020. He kept asking me if I wanted to do it as well and my response was it is a huge time commitment and I have no real interest. I never told him that this was a bucket list item when I was in high school.
Any lunch meeting, run together, phone conversation or text the topic of IRONMAN would come up. Dwayne kept on telling me how I should really consider. After many conversations the needle moved towards yes I should join the IRONMAN path.
In past posts I have written how I was a very inconsistent endurance athlete. This had always held me back from really going deep into a sport I love. I had already started my exercise streak and was training for a Marathon when I brought the subject up of IRONMAN with my family and discussed the pros and cons and the commitment was made.
The next decision was what race should we do and after looking at calendars IRONMAN Canada in Penticton was selected. On August 10, 2019 I got a text from Dwayne that he and his cousin were registering. Forty five minutes later I had filled in the forms, clicked all check-boxes, handed over my credit card and my IRONMAN journey began.
